Itinerary

Day 1 - December 7
Arrive Santiago early in the morning. The hotel has an airport shuttle, and you can take this to your hotel where you can rest up if you choose, or explore the city. This evening, we’ll have terremotos at a secret yet beloved dive bar, followed by an orientation dinner with the group.
Day 2 - December 8
Today will be a long day of travel, but Chile’s charm will somehow keep you energized. In the morning, we will check out of our hotel and head to the airport for our flight to Punta Arenas (3.5 hours). We will eat lunch, and then board our bus for Puerto Natales. We will quickly check in to our modest rooms, and have dinner nearby. Night at Puerto Natales
Day 3 - December 9
We will check out of our rooms and have breakfast nearby. We’ll take the bus to Pudeto (2.5 hours) and from here will take a catamaran to behold the behemoth star of the park: Glacier Grey. Night at Refugio Paine Grande.
Day 4 - December 10
December 10: Trek to the mirador for Glacier Grey (or all the way up to Paso John Gardner, for those ambitious folks). Return to camp for dinner and another night at Paine Grande.
Day 5 - December 11
This will be a long day, but the scenery will keep us going. We’ll depart from Paine Grande to Campamento Italiano where we will leave our bags, and bring our lunches up to Mirador Frances (and if we are up for it, we’ll go all the way to Mirador Britanico (where we can get our first sneak-peek of the Torres). We will head back, pick up our bags and then trek about 2 more hours to Refugio Los Cuernos, where we will be rewarded by wood-burned hot tubs overlooking the turquoise waters of Nordenskjöld Lake. Night at Refugio Los Cuernos.
Day 6 - December 12
This is our last full day, and we’ll trek onward to Campamento Chileno (about 3.5 hours) where we will have our lunch. From here, we will move forward on a steep trail for about 2 hours to behold the Torres head-on. We will hike back down, check into our room and have dinner. Night at Refugio Chileno.
Day 7 - December 13
For anyone who wants to really witness the Torres in all their glory, we’ll want to wake up quite early so we can catch the sun rise over the Torres. It is truly a photographer’s paradise, so don’t forget your camera. This is the finale of the trip, that will render you speechless any time you try to describe it to someone. After we hike back down for lunch, we will be picked up by a shuttle that will return us to Puerto Natales, where we will check back into our hotel and have our final dinner. Night at Puerto Natales.
Day 8 - December 14
After breakfast, we will check out of our hotel and head towards the bus stop to return to Punta Arenas. We will have lunch, and head to the airport for our flights back to Santiago. For those who wish to stay another night, please contact our office and we will be happy to arrange for a fee. Otherwise, you are free to fly home this evening as most flights depart around 10pm. Please do not arrange your flights any earlier than 10pm.

Note: Itinerary is subject to change depending on permit availability, weather, trail and course conditions, travel, health and well-being of the trip participants, and interests of the group.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Physical Requirements/ Health

Let’s not be fooled, the ability to witness the beauty of this place is not without a price, but as once described by an old Chilean man (encountered by BWA director in 2016) “este lugar… vale la pena” or “this place is worth the pain”.

The steep terrain can be demanding, but this is lessened by the fact that you will not need to carry your food or camping equipment. While it is true that you do not have to camp in a tent and you get to have nice meals and enjoy delicious wine each evening, do not forget that this is a strenuous trek – each hiking day covers more than 10 miles. There will be long days with steep descents and ascents, so physical preparation is very important.

Some of the activities that you may choose to participate in are strenuous and should not be undertaken if you have any health conditions which may put you at risk. You will be required to consult your physician for a thorough medical check-up and clearance before attempting the trip. Any medical conditions must be disclosed on your registration forms. If you are over 50 years old, talk to your doctor about doing a “stress EKG”. Should you require any medication whatsoever, you must provide your own and be able to administer it yourself.

Accommodations

Our accommodations in Santiago will be a standard hotel with basic amenities, but the rest of the accommodations will be far more spartan (likely without reliable Wi-Fi) from here on out. While in the park, the accommodations are called refugios, or basically sheltered camps. For those who wish to do the W trek while camping, please call our office for details (there is a small price reduction).

Arrivals/Departures

Most flights from the United States will bring you to Santiago in the early morning. We will meet as a group at our hotel in Santiago on December 7th at 4pm, so plan your flights accordingly. You may depart Santiago on December 14th any time after 10 pm.
