Join Backwoods Adventures for an incredible luxury tour of South Africa.  You’ll begin by immersing yourself in the vibrant culture of Cape Town, tasting the best wines that South Africa has to offer, and enjoying the coastal beauty of the Cape Penninsula.  Then, you’re off to explore the Garden Route – one of South Africa’s hidden treasures.  Enjoy an ocean safari, hike through an offshore eco-park, and interact with monkeys and elephants at rescue sanctuaries.  Then spend 6 days on safari at 2 private, luxurious Big-5 game resorts. Day 1 - Arrive in Cape Town
Arrive in Cape Town, where you’ll be welcomed by your expert, local guide and transferred to the Victoria and Alfred Hotel. Once you’ve freshened up, enjoy a welcome dinner with your guides at a relaxed waterfront seafood restaurant. (Meals Included: D)
Day 2 - South African Peninsula
You’re off to experience the scenic South African Peninsula! Highlights include the Atlantic and Indian Ocean coastlines, the National Botanical Gardens, abundant wildlife, indigenous vegetation, beaches, lighthouses, and historical fishing villages. After the peninsula tour, you’ll enjoy dinner at Gold Restaurant, complete with interactive drumming and pan-African cuisine in a glorious setting. (Meals Included: B, L, D)
Day 3 - Winelands Countryside Tour
Today, you get to experience the best wines in all of South Africa through a full-day Winelands Countryside tour. See the Franschoek Valley with its endless mountain vistas, then visit the pearl of the Cape – home to the Afrikaans language. After lunch, you’ll tour a wine cellar and taste the exquisite wines that make this region so famous. Then, it’s back to Cape Town for dinner at Melonchinos, famous for its traditional Italian cuisine. (Meals Included: B, L, D)
Day 4 - Garden Route to Knysna
This morning we’ll bid farewell to lovely Cape Town and travel along the scenic Garden Route to Knysna. Along the way, we stop at an ostrich farm for a tour and lunch. The scenery along the Garden Route is indescribable, and you’ll make plenty of stops to take photos and enjoy the unique landscape. In Knysna, you’ll stay in the Turbine Boutique – a unique 5-star hotel housed in a converted power station! (Meals included: B, L, D)
Day 5 - Featherbed Nature Eco-Preserve
Today, you’ll hop aboard a ferry and sail to the Featherbed Nature Eco-Preserve. Here you will take a guided walk, passing through Milkwood forests onto the steep sandstone cliffs, into ancient Khoi Khoi sea caves and along a scenic coastal path. Your guide will inform you on the ecology, fauna, flora, bird and marine life in the reserve. After sailing back to the mainland, you’ll visit the Knysna Elephant Park – the first facility in South Africa to house and care for orphaned African elephants. (Meals Included: B, L, D)
Day 6 - Ocean Safari & Monkey Sanctuary
Today’s adventures include an ocean safari and a visit to a monkey sanctuary! The ecological adventure begins with an exciting beach launch and sails past a bird sanctuary and Keurbooms beach to Arch Rock. Commonly, you’ll encounter Bottlenose and the rare Indo-Pacific Humpback dolphins as well as some shark species. Travelling on, Bryde’s whales can be seen, as well as Humpback whales during their season. Sailing back along the inside of Robberg, you’ll see unique geology and observe a growing Cape Fur Seal colony. After lunch, you’ll visit Monkeyland, a Primate Sanctuary before heading back to Knysna. (Meals Included: B, L, D)
Day 7 - To Kichaka Luxury Game Lodge
Shortly after checkout, our group will depart the Turbine hotel and travel to Kichaka Luxury game Lodge (approx 4-hours travel time). Situated in a private game reserve in the malaria-free Eastern Cape, Kichaka is the perfect place to enjoy a Big Five safari experience in quiet luxury. (Meals Included: B, L, D)
Day 8/9 - Wild Game Drive at Kichaka

Activities at Kichaka Luxury Game Lodge include twice-daily game drives in the early morning and late afternoon. Daily schedule is subject to change and times may vary slightly, but each day typically looks like this:

  • 05:00 – 5:30 am – Wake up call
  • Meet in lounge area for morning tea and muffins
  • 06:00 am – Depart on game drive
  • 09:30 – 10:00 am – Breakfast
  • 11:00 am – depending on the season and the rules of the Reserve, the lodge may offer an optional safari walk with an armed tracker
  • Relax and unwind /read/swim
  • 1:00 pm – Lunch (Some lodges may offer high tea)
  • 4:00 pm – High tea & afternoon game drive departs (includes sundowner stop)
  • 7:00 – 7:30 pm – return to the lodge for dinner
Day 10 - Travel: Port Elizabeth, Johannesburg, and Hoedspruit
Transfer from Kichaga Luxury Game Lodge to Port Elizabeth Airport, then fly from Port Elizabeth to Johannesburg, and Johannesburg to Hoedspruit. Once you’ve landed in Hoedspruit, you will be transferred to the Kapama Private Game Reserve. Kapama offers guests the ultimate in luxurious tented accommodations. Every comfort is catered for, and the focus is on personal attention and superb service. Built on an elevated river bank, each tent boasts a private viewing deck. This is the ideal location to sit back and watch nature in its natural habitat. (Meals Included: B, D)
Day 11/12 - Safari Activities at Kapama

Safari activities at the lodge, including twice-daily game drives. Daily schedule is subject to change and times may vary slightly, but each day typically looks like this:

  • 05:00 – 5:30 am – Wake up call
  • Meet in lounge area for morning tea and muffins
  • 06:00 am – Depart on game drive
  • 09:30 – 10:00 am – Breakfast
  • 11:00 am – depending on the season, the lodge may offer an optional safari walk with an armed tracker

Day 13 - To Johannesburg & Departure
Transfer from Kapama Buffalo Camp to Hoedspruit Airport, where you’ll catch your flight to Johannesburg International Airport. Transfer to your international flight home, or to wherever your next destination may be! (Meals Included: B)

This is a luxury adventure, and that spirit of luxury is reflected in the choice of meals on your trip. While on safari, meals will be prepared for you by the safari chef. While in town, you will experience dining at some of the best restaurants available.

  • Victoria and Alfred Hotel (3 nights/4-star) – Within walking distance to the vibrant Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, this location is ideal for anyone who wishes to have a base from which to explore the city. Elegant and luxurious interiors are only rivaled by the hotel’s laid-back atmosphere and warm personalized service.
  • Turbine Boutique Hotel and Spa (3 nights/5-star) – This exceptional boutique hotel is situated on the picturesque Thesen Island, within the scenic Knysna estuary, a location which is considered by many to be one of the most the prestigious on the Garden Route.
  • Kichaka Private Game Lodge (3 nights/5-star) – Situated in a private game reserve in the malaria-free Eastern Cape, Kichaka is the perfect place to enjoy a Big Five safari experience in quiet luxury.
  • Kapama Buffalo Camp (3 nights/5-star) – Reminiscent of a traditional African safari camp from a bygone era, Buffalo Camp offers the ultimate luxurious tented accommodation experience. Built from natural stone and wood, the luxury game lodge has an olde worlde atmosphere while being completely contemporary. All comforts are catered for in the plush tented suites and throughout this carefully appointed luxury safari lodge.

Passport/Visa Requirements

Entry to South Africa requires two blank pages in your passport and passport validity for at least 6 months after departure. Please check Visa entry requirements with your local embassy for the countries you are visiting. We recommend that all passengers purchase travel insurance in their country of residence.
