Guadalupe Mountains National Park is one of Texas’ best-kept secrets and a hiker’s paradise.  On this trip you’ll hike the state’s highest peak and deepest canyon, and hopefully witness the state’s most brilliant display of fall color.  Relaxing around the campfire each night you’ll learn of the legends and lore of those that have inhabited this beautiful desert wilderness over the last 10,000 years.  In the end, you won’t help but wonder why this is one of the least visited national parks in the country.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival in Van Horn, TX
Meet your Backwoods Adventures guide in Van Horn, TX between 3 and 5 pm. Get checked into your room at the beautifully restored Hotel El Capitan, built in 1930 and designed by famed architect Henry Trost. We’ll have a meet-and-greet with a trip overview before dinner at the hotel restaurant. (Meals included: dinner)
Day 2
After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll depart for Guadalupe Mountains National Park (1 hour drive). We’ll stop along the way for a photo opportunity of the park’s most photographed prominence, El Capitan. After checking in at the park office, we’ll depart for a 4-mile roundtrip hike to a narrow slot in the bottom of 3000 foot deep Pine Springs Canyon framed by Texas’ four highest peaks all over 8000 feet. Back in camp we’ll have lunch and set up camp before a short drive to the Frijole Ranch Museum for a tour and 2.5 mile hike to beautiful Smith Spring. Dinner will be served in camp. (Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner)
Day 3
After breakfast in camp we’ll depart in vehicles for the McKittrick Canyon Visitor’s Center and trailhead. Each fall, this canyon comes alive with color as the Bigtooth Maples turn brilliant shades of yellow, orange, and red, providing a striking contrast to the typical desert yuccas, agave, sotol, and the evergreen pines normally found only in the park’s higher elevations. Hiking 2.4 miles, we’ll arrive at Pratt Lodge, former home of Wallace Pratt who donated the land in this amazingly beautiful canyon to the national park system spurring the development of the park. After a short hike deeper into the canyon we’ll stop at a natural cave-like structure called “The Grotto” for lunch. After hiking back to the trailhead (total 7 mile roundtrip) we’ll head back to camp for dinner. (Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner)
Day 4
After spending a couple of nights at higher elevation (campsite is at 5480 ft) you’ll be ready for today’s hike to the highest point in Texas, Guadalupe Peak, at 8749 ft. Depending on the route we choose, this 8.5 to 10 mile hike will take us from the desert lowlands up into the high forest of Ponderosa Pine and Douglas Fir. Arriving at the summit, we’ll sign the summit log and enjoy a trail lunch while taking in the breathtaking views over the desert salt flats below. We’ll then descend back down to the trailhead, say our goodbyes to this amazing park, and head back to Hotel El Capitan in Van Horn for a well-deserved shower, hearty dinner, and sleep in a cozy bed.(Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner)
Day 5
Farewell breakfast at Hotel El Capitan, check out of hotel, and depart for home. (Meals included: breakfast)
