Adventure Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival

Arrive at JRO, airport pickup and transfer to your hotel in Arusha. Orientation dinner.

Day 2 - Londorossi Gate to Forest Camp

We depart Moshi for Londorossi Gate, which takes about 2-3 hours, where you will complete entry formalities. Then drive to the Lemosho trailhead (another hour to reach the trailhead). Upon arrival at trailhead, we eat lunch, then commence through undisturbed forest which winds to the first camp site.

Elevation: 7,800ft to 9,500ft

Hiking: 6km, 3-4 hours

Habitat: Rain Forest

Day 3 - Forest Camp to Shira Camp 1

We continue on the trail leading out of the forest and into a savannah of tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock draped with lichen beards. As we ascend through the lush rolling hills and cross several streams, we reach the Shira Ridge before dropping gently down to Shira 1 camp. The view of Kibo from across the plateau is amazing.

Elevation: 9,500ft to 11,500ft

Hiking: 8km, 5-6 hours

Habitat: Moorland

Day 4 - Shira Camp 1 to Shira 2 to Moir Hut

We explore the Shira plateau for a full day. It is a gentle walk east toward Kibo’s glaciered peak, across the plateau which leads to Shira 2 camp on moorland meadows by a stream. Then we continue to Moir Hut, a little used site on the base of Lent Hills. A variety of walks are available on Lent Hills making this an excellent acclimatization opportunity. Shira is one of the highest plateaus on earth.

Elevation: 11,500ft to 13,800 ft

Hiking: 14km, 5-7 hours

Habitat: Moorland

Day 5 - Moir Hut to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

From the Shira Plateau, we continue to the east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. As we continue, our direction changes to the South East towards the Lava Tower (4360M), called the “Shark’s Tooth.” Shortly after the tower, we come to the second junction which brings us up to the Arrow Glacier at an altitude of 16,000ft. We now continue down to the Barranco Hut at an altitude of 13,000ft. Here we rest, enjoy dinner, and overnight. Although you end the day at the same elevation as when you started, this day is very important for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for summit day.

Hiking: 7km, 4-6 hours

Habitat: Semi-Desert

Day 6 - Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

After breakfast, we leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge passing the Barranco Wall, to the Karanga Valley campsite (3995M) This is a short day meant for acclimatization.

Elevation: 13,000ft to 13,100ft

Hiking: 5km, 4-5 hours

Habitat: Alpine Desert

Day 7 - Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

After breakfast, we leave Karanga and hit the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. We continue up to the Barafu Hut (4673M). At this point, you have completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here we make camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are to be seen from this position.

Hiking: 4km, 4-5 hours

Habitat: Alpine Desert

Day 8 - Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Hut

Very early in the morning (midnight to 2am), we continue our way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. You head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek.

At Stella Point (18,600 ft), you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see (weather permitting). From Stella Point, you may encounter snow all they way on your 1-hour ascent to the summit. At Uhuru Peak (5895M), you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. Faster hikers will see the sunrise from the summit.

From the summit, we now make our descent continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for lunch. You will want gaiters and trekking poles for the loose gravel going down. Mweka Camp (3068M) is situated in the upper forest and mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon. Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.

Elevation: 15,300ft to 19,345ft (and down to 10,000ft)

Hiking: 5 km ascent, 7-8 hours / 12 km descent, 4-6 hours

Habitat: Artic

Day 9 - Mweka Camp to Moshi

Elevation: 10,000ft to 5,400ft

Hiking: 10km, 3-4 hours

Habitat: After breakfast, we continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy).

From the gate, you continue another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet you at Mweka village to drive you back to hotel in Moshi.

Day 10 - Arusha Lake Manyara

After lunch in Arusha, you make your way to Lake Manyara National Park, where you will spend time game viewing wildlife in the park. Lake Manyara National Park is truly stunning, with the western wall of the Rift Valley escarpment provides a backdrop for your search of the park’s phenomenal birdlife, tree-climbing lions, elephants, giraffes, and hippos. The afternoon is spent game viewing along the main road that winds for several kilometers through a cool, lush, mature groundwater forest dominated by large fichus trees and a tangle of green epiphytes.

Day 11 - Lake Manyara Ngorongoro Crater

After early breakfast you will proceed with picnic to Ngorongoro Conservation Area. On arrival you will directly descend the Ngorongoro crater for a full day of a game viewing. you explore wildlife-rich Ngorongoro Crater, long regarded as the Garden of Eden. Within the walls of the crater lie short grasslands, swamps, forests and a freshwater lake, inspiring continual migration of animals in and out of the crater.

From the comfort of your specially built 4×4 tour vehicle, crafted exclusively for Big Expeditions & Safaris, you’ll have an opportunity to spot the Big Five that include elephant, buffalo, the black-maned lion, leopard and the endangered black rhinoceros as well as hyenas, baboons, and flamingos. Enjoy a delightful packed lunch in the heart of this ancient volcanic crater; it is sure to be a memorable highlight of your Tanzania safari. In the late evening you will return to your camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 12 - Ngorongoro Arusha/Depart

After breakfast drive through Maasai villages and the Meserani Snake Park to arrive in Arusha for lunch. A day room to be provided till late evening when you will be collected from the hotel and transferred to Kilimanjaro International airport to board your home bound flight.

Additional Information


Breakfasts are typically eggs, toast, meat and fruit along with hot drinks. Lunches are some combination of bread, cheese, vegetables, and hot drinks. Tea and snacks are served in late afternoon. Dinners are soup and bread, followed by meats, beans, starches and vegetables. Vegetarian and other special diets can usually be accommodated.


Our accommodations may vary based on availability, but all hotels are among the highest ranked in the nation for location, service and amenities. During the trek, we will be staying in large 4-person tents. All accommodations are based on double occupancy.


The trip to Kilimanjaro will take us to remote regions at high altitude. When gaining altitude above 10,000 feet, we build in sufficient rest days to ensure that you acclimatize properly. We cannot determine how you will do at altitude, but being in the best shape possible and having low body fat will help immensely. You are strongly advised to consult your physician for a thorough checkup and clearance before attempting this trip. Talk to your doctor about vaccinations, prescriptions you are taking or might want to take with you in case you get sick.

All prices are calculated for double-occupancy. To ensure your comfort, we will always match you with a roommate of the same sex – and if we're unable to match you with a roommate, you may end up with your own room free of charge. If sharing is not your idea of fun, you can request a single supplement for a small upcharge when you pay your final amount. You will be able to make this election on your trip registration.
