Do you need to “Check the Box” on a 40-inch Redfish? If yes, we have the trip for you! Each winter after their Fall spawn in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico, the Bull Redfish move into the shallow water of the Louisiana marsh to feed aggressively. This marauding-like behavior, along with their bulging shoulders pushing submarine-like wakes and deep coppery red scales glowing just under the surface, can make them easy targets -- but sight-casting to these bruisers can cause even the most steadfast of anglers to lose their cool from excitement! February conditions can be ideal for targeting these huge, handsome species. Visit the Land of the Giants with Backwoods Adventures! Interested in this trip? The little fishing village of Cocodrie is one hour southwest of New Orleans, aka The Big Easy. Cocodrie serves up the most authentic of a South Louisiana Experience as you can get. Your accommodations are a well-appointed, fully-featured fishing "camp" (what Cajuns call their fishing lodges). Anglers will be treated to delicious and distinctive Cajun food featuring local ingredients and recipes. Backwoods Adventures partners with some of the top guides on the Gulf Coast, who have experience running the marsh maze and vast knowledge of the target species. Their shallow-drafting poling skiffs provide a comfortable, stealthy fishing platform for accessing the skinny water where these giants roam. Two anglers per boat with one fishing at a time.
The fall and winter months are the best time of year to target these trophy size fish. Shots at fish in the 20-30lb range are common, with the possibility of targeting fish pushing into the 40lb class. Fly fishing skills needed include: saltwater quick cast starting with the fly in hand; accurate presentations at distances 15 to 60 feet, with large/weighted flies; backhand/back cast presentations; and casting in the wind. (Hint: lessons with skilled casting instructor can help you prepare which will increase your success and enjoyment!)
The Louisiana marsh is a short drive from cuisine, entertainment and nightlife of downtown New Orleans. Louisiana really is a Sporting Paradise!
