Additional Information

Physical Requirements/ Health

Let’s not be fooled, the ability to witness the beauty of this place is not without a price, but as once described by an old Chilean man (encountered by BWA director in 2016) “este lugar… vale la pena” or “this place is worth the pain”.

The steep terrain can be demanding, but this is lessened by the fact that you will not need to carry your food or camping equipment. While it is true that you do not have to camp in a tent and you get to have nice meals and enjoy delicious wine each evening, do not forget that this is a strenuous trek – each hiking day covers more than 10 miles. There will be long days with steep descents and ascents, so physical preparation is very important.

Some of the activities that you may choose to participate in are strenuous and should not be undertaken if you have any health conditions which may put you at risk. You will be required to consult your physician for a thorough medical check-up and clearance before attempting the trip. Any medical conditions must be disclosed on your registration forms. If you are over 50 years old, talk to your doctor about doing a “stress EKG”. Should you require any medication whatsoever, you must provide your own and be able to administer it yourself.

Our accommodations in Santiago will be a standard hotel with basic amenities, but the rest of the accommodations will be far more spartan (likely without reliable Wi-Fi) from here on out. While in the park, the accommodations are called refugios, or basically sheltered camps. For those who wish to do the W trek while camping, please call our office for details (there is a small price reduction). Accommodations are quoted in double occupancy. Single accommodations may be available upon request for an additional fee. Please inquire upon registration.

Most flights from the United States will bring you to Santiago in the early morning. We will meet as a group at our hotel in Santiago on December 7th at 4pm, so plan your flights accordingly. You may depart Santiago on December 14th any time after 10 pm.

Single Supplement

All prices are calculated for double-occupancy. To ensure your comfort, we will always match you with a roommate of the same sex – and if we're unable to match you with a roommate, you may end up with your own room free of charge. If sharing is not your idea of fun, you can request a single supplement for a small upcharge when you pay your final amount. You will be able to make this election on your trip registration.
